When clients ask us "Where should we hire?", the answer depends on what they're building, how much they want to pay, and how quickly they need people. India's tech talent isn't uniformly distributed — each city has distinct strengths, salary profiles, and hiring dynamics.

This guide draws from our placement data across five major tech hubs to help you make informed location decisions.

    Bangalore (Bengaluru)

Talent pool: ~2.2 million IT professionals — India's largest

Strengths: Product engineering, SaaS, AI/ML, startup ecosystem

Salary index: 100 (baseline — all other cities are compared to Bangalore)

Bangalore remains the undisputed capital of Indian tech. It has the deepest talent pool for product engineering roles, the highest concentration of engineers with startup experience, and the most mature ecosystem for AI/ML talent.

Best for: Product companies, AI/ML teams, engineering leadership, startup-speed hiring

Watch out for: Highest salaries in India (10-25% above other cities), aggressive counter-offers, and 15-20% annual attrition. Candidates here have multiple offers simultaneously — your process needs to be fast and your employer brand needs to be strong.

    Average time-to-fill (our data): 28 days for mid-level, 42 days for senior/lead

    Hyderabad

Talent pool: ~1.4 million IT professionals

Strengths: Enterprise technology, cloud infrastructure, GCCs, BFSI tech

Salary index: 82-88 (15-18% below Bangalore)

Hyderabad has emerged as India's preferred GCC destination, hosting centres for Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Apple, and dozens of mid-size US companies. The talent pool skews towards enterprise tech — Java, Spring Boot, microservices, cloud-native architecture — with growing strength in data engineering.

Best for: GCC setup, enterprise backend teams, cloud/infra roles, cost-efficient scaling

Watch out for: Smaller pool of senior product engineers compared to Bangalore. Candidates with strong enterprise backgrounds may need ramp-up time for startup-pace environments.

    Average time-to-fill: 25 days for mid-level, 38 days for senior/lead

    Pune

Talent pool: ~1.1 million IT professionals

Strengths: Automotive tech, embedded systems, manufacturing, German MNC ecosystem

Salary index: 80-85 (15-20% below Bangalore)

Pune's tech identity is shaped by its strong German MNC presence (Mercedes, Siemens, Bosch, Continental) and a growing SaaS ecosystem. It's the go-to city for embedded systems, IoT, and automotive technology — skills that are hard to find at scale elsewhere in India.

Best for: Automotive/embedded tech, European company GCCs (time zone overlap), SaaS product teams looking for cost-efficient alternatives to Bangalore

Watch out for: Smaller overall pool means niche skills can be harder to source at volume. The city is still developing its AI/ML talent pipeline.

    Average time-to-fill: 22 days for mid-level, 35 days for senior/lead

    Chennai

Talent pool: ~1.0 million IT professionals

Strengths: Data engineering, BFSI technology, backend services, QA/testing

Salary index: 75-82 (18-25% below Bangalore)

Chennai offers the most cost-effective hiring among India's top tech cities, with a talent pool that's particularly strong in data engineering, backend services, and BFSI technology. The city's large IT services presence (TCS, Infosys, Cognizant all have major campuses) means a deep pool of engineers with enterprise experience.

Best for: Data engineering teams, BFSI technology, cost-optimised scaling, QA and testing centres of excellence

Watch out for: Smaller startup ecosystem means fewer candidates with product company experience. Frontend/React talent pool is notably smaller than Bangalore or Hyderabad.

    Average time-to-fill: 20 days for mid-level, 32 days for senior/lead

    NCR (Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida)

Talent pool: ~1.3 million IT professionals

Strengths: E-commerce, fintech, enterprise sales tech, B2B SaaS

Salary index: 90-95 (5-10% below Bangalore)

The NCR region (primarily Gurgaon and Noida) has a large talent pool driven by the e-commerce boom (Flipkart's early presence, Paytm, Zomato) and a growing fintech ecosystem. It's also India's largest market for enterprise B2B sales roles — if you need sales engineers or solutions architects, NCR is your city.

Best for: E-commerce tech, fintech, B2B SaaS, sales engineering, companies wanting Delhi's connectivity and international accessibility

Watch out for: Longer commute times and infrastructure challenges compared to other cities. Salary expectations are closer to Bangalore levels, reducing the cost arbitrage. Quality of life factors mean higher churn risk for candidates relocated from other cities.

    Average time-to-fill: 26 days for mid-level, 40 days for senior/lead

    Our Recommendation

Most of our clients who are building 20+ person teams end up in one of two patterns:

    1. Single-city strategy: Bangalore (if budget allows and speed is critical) or Hyderabad (for cost-efficient GCCs)
    2. Hub-and-spoke: Primary team in Bangalore for leadership and architecture, secondary team in Hyderabad or Pune for scaling — connected by strong remote collaboration practices
